Remembering Ernie

Ernie was our neighbour for 33 years. He was a most kind and caring person.

We will always remember him as an avid gardener, and a very meticulous one. Everything in the garden had to be at military precision; the tomato stakes had to be at exactly the same height and evenly spaced – using a ruler! (The same applied to the Christmas lights around the yew tree in front of the house.)

Ernie had a pet in his garden, a little chipmunk. He built a small house for the chipmunk with a bridge to cross over to the fence. Every morning he replenished the chipmunk’s supply of first grade peanuts, and every night he closed the gate to prevent other animals from getting into the chipmunk's house. The chipmunk was so spoiled. One day the chipmunk left and never returned. Ernie was so sad.

Our garden was invaded at one time by many unruly hollyhock flowers. We tried very hard to get rid of them, but intentionally left one by the fence because Ernie loved this flower. He cared for that hollyhock for many seasons.

We treasure our many memories of Ernie and will miss him very much.
